Recently, Volkswagen donated more than 600 bicycles to the students of over 11 rural schools across the Nkonkobe district in Eastern Cape. This initiative was a Volkswagen and its partners World Vision Switzerland, World Vision South Africa and Qhubeka.

The BEEP Initiative

This donation has increased the number of bicycles sponsored by Volkswagen to 1100 that were offered to rural schools in the region in the last 2 months. In April, over 500 bicycles were handed over to 9 rural schools in Umzimkhulu,KwaZulu-Natal. According to recent reports, it was found that almost 11 million kids of the approximate 17 million school children across South Africa, walk to their schools every day. Around 500,000 of these children walk more than 6 km or an hour to school. The huge walking distance which the learners need to commute every day is believed to be one of the prime reasons from rising rate of school dropouts in rural areas, specifically fro girl students.

The BEEP (Bicycle Education EmpowermentProgramme) was originally started by World Bicycle Relief in Zambia in 2009. The programme established that bicycles are an affordable, reliable and safe transportation mode for the students. BEEP was introduced in South Africa in 2013 by Qhubeka in association with World Vision South Africa. Since then, more than 8100 bicycles have already been donated across 5 provinces.

Encouraging Education

Thomas Schaefer, Managing Director ofVolkswagen Group South Africa, said “Education is one of our key pillars in our quest to be a company with meaning and impact through our Corporate Social Investment initiatives under the banner of Volkswagen for Good. As the maker of people’s car, we are passionate about South Africa. This drives us to working towards making a sustainable difference in the fight against poverty and community upliftment.”

He further added “Through our partnership with Qhubeka and World Vision South Africa, we seek to make a small difference but with big impact on the lives of young boys and girls in the most rural parts of our country. We are very hopeful that these bicycles will change the learners’ approach to their schooling and encourage them to work harder to be the best that they want to be.”

Similar sentiments were shared by Qhubeka as both establishments are primarily focused on helping African students access learning opportunities in an easier and better way. Sarah Phaweni, executive director at Qhubeka, said “Qhubeka is delighted to be partnering with Volkswagen to provide access to education through bicycles to children in South Africa. Thanks to Volkswagen’s generous donation distance no longer needs to be a barrier to education for 1100 school children in Nkonkobe and Umzimkhulu. Research shows that education is an essential element in the fight to end the cycle of poverty in developing countries.” She added “With BEEP, we can make an immediate difference to school attendance as well as improve children’s well-being with reliable and affordable transportation.”

Expanding Education's Reach

Each of the students are awarded a bicycle along with a helmet, combination lock, spanner, and pump. The students, as well as their parents, need to sign a contract which explains the rules and regulations for using the cycles. The bicycle will considered as the personal property of the students after the stipulated 2 years.

Paula Barnard, national director of World Vision South Africa, said “With BEEP 2015 well underway we’re undoubtedly meeting what we set out to achieve, reaching the most rural of communities to enable these children to attend school on time and so improve their overall educational outcomes.”

Have an interview coming up? Wouldn't it be great if you knew exactly what the HR or the hiring manager of a firm would be asking you in your upcoming interview? Job seekers should expect less customary interview questions. Knowing how to put together a reliable, straight-forward answer to the most common interview questions is the ultimate key in landing with a job you really desire. Interviews can be stressful, especially if it is for a job you really want to take up.

'Practice makes it perfect' is absolutely true when it comes to going for job interviews even though there is no fixed format that every job interviews will follow. The best thing to do is to think, prepare and revise through the questions you are likely to be asked in the interviews as many times as you can and construct the answers ahead of time but never try to memorize them. First impressions are last impressions. Cracking a job interview can help to snag you the job of your dreams.

Here are a few common interview questions that are generally asked and the correct answers to it:

1.Tell me about yourself- This is the most common
question asked in the interviews. It is should last for not more than three minutes, where you just have to give a brief about yourself about who you are that includes- your academic qualifications, achievements, job positions, your previous experiences (if you have any) and how you can contribute to the company with your background and experiences. Do not give your personal history.

2. Why did you leave your last job?- If you have left your previous for some negative situations, never say something bad about the supervisors, co-workers or about the firm where you had worked. Whatever reason it may be, always stay calm and positive. You can focus on the fact that you are looking for better opportunities and growth.

6. What is your expected salary?- Job seekers are been frequently asked this question but fail to give an appropiate answer. It would be better to avoid this question unless if you have been offered the job. You can say something for instance- Can you tell me the range for this position? Or say that it can depend on the details of the job. Try to negotiate for yourself.

7. What are your strengths? - Choose your strengths that are most related to the particular position which you have applied for. Pick up the strengths that matches with the company's culture and goals and be specific to what you say. It should tie to the needs of your job.

8.Do you have any questions?- This reveals a lot about your personality. Do not ask too many questions. This is an important part of the interview. Focus more on what you can do for the organization and not what the organization can do for you.

9.Why hire you?- Even if any of your relatives o friends is working in that particular firm, never not say that since it gives a negative vibe. Just mention your resources meet what the firm needs.

Always remember to be what you are at your interview and deliver your best. Never fake out , because sooner or later it would be noticed and have a negative impact on your job.

Online Education Allows Millions of African Learners To Study Higher Education

If you want to earn a degree from a US or UK university, then you can do it in an affordable way without even leaving your home. How? All thanks to the facilities and benefits offered by online education.

Better learning Opportunities :

Zuhur Yasin owns a bachelor’s degree from a reputed US university although she has never visited America. Most of 29-year-old's education in Somaliland (located in Somalia) were completed in a unique classroom that consists of several computers connected with microphones and webcams. Yasin participated in live digital classes and watched videos offered by Indiana University while pursuing her journalism course from the University of Hargeisa. She said “We had discussions and shared any challenges or questions.”

Yasin was connected with the Indiana University through the African Virtual University (AVU), which is an inter-governmental establishment. According to the AVU, the institute has utilised digital learning to train and educate more than 43,000 learners since its establishment in 1997. The university declared 29 new distance learning centres last year. The educators use various apps and programmes like WhatsApp and Skype to interact with the learners. However, the classes are conducted by using particular software.

Expanding reach of Education :

The African Virtual University is also planning to offer lectures through smartphones and increasing their accessibility, so that it can be offered to the estimated 112m smartphone users in Africa. Many learners, like Yasin, in sub-Saharan Africa are searching for learning opportunities at recognised universities. The region saw the lowest university attendance worldwide back in 2008 with merely 6 per cent of secondary school graduates pursuing higher education. This figure was much below the global average of 26 oper cent, as per the UN’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Recently, the African Union (AU) launched the eLearning Africa conference on ICT which aims at development, education and training and plans to close that gap and improve the human resources required for economic progress. It is believed that around 1,200 business representatives and government ministers attended the conference. Founder of eLearning Africa, Rebecca Stromeyer, says “Now is the time when technology can really help to entrench the progress many African countries have made in education. If the right decisions are taken now, they will help to sustain long-term economic growth.”

eLearning is the Ideal Solution :

Education experts believe that online learning tools can help students in Africa to connect to MOOCs (massive open online courses), like Coursera which offers free online tuition from several leading universities worldwide. Earlier this year, the African Virtual University enrolled over 1,698 African learners in their first MOOC that explored different aspects of technology to enhance the learning experience. Mark West, a mobile learning expert at UNESCO, says, “[Online learning] is a portal into educational opportunities that, frankly, hadn’t existed before, and some of those opportunities, if you can afford the broadband connection and the hardware to use that connection, are free. For really self-motivated learners, it’s remarkable.”

But the fact remains that online universities are still facing the challenge of high dropout rates. West believes it will be best if we could combine online education with practical learning and assessment. He says “A lot of people start but they never finish – they don’t finish individual courses and they definitely don’t finish entire areas of study.” Yasin, who worked hard for her online degree, says “In a regular class you have a teacher who is in front of you who makes you concentrate. With the online environment, you have to have discipline, make your own timetable to listen to the lectures, and submit the assignments online.

The bottom line :

Virtual learning is undoubtedly the ideal solution to the difficulties of students in Africa in pursuing university education. Online courses help to address the bigger issues related to learning in Africa.

Why Jamaica Needs To Invest In Education To Eradicate Poverty

Is being poor a crime? Irrespective of what you think, those who are actually suffering from poverty think that it is no less than a form of punishment which suffocates their potential for development. I know this for a fact that poverty can feel like a crippling and chronic state which not only affects your mind, but also your health and spirit.

A Disease Named Poverty
Let’s face it; poverty is a global condition that affects numerous people across different countries worldwide. In 2011, around 17 per cent of individuals residing in developing countries survived on or even below US$1.25 per day, according to data from the World Bank. This goes to show that 21 per cent of the global population, which is around 1.4 billion people, survive in excessive poverty. Shockingly, children and women comprise majority of the numbers who live daily in poverty. Is this acceptable?

Like most other developing nations, Jamaica is still struggling with issues related to drafting measures and removing poverty. As per the 2012 Survey of LivingConditions by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, over 500,000 Jamaicans (i.e. 1 out of every 5) are surviving below the poverty line. These figures are seriously striking and it is time for the government to take the necessary steps in order to continue sustainable development.

Is Education The Cure?

I believe, the primary solution to eradicate poverty is sufficient investment in education as it will liberate innumerable Jamaican families and allow them to break away from this cycle. It has already been observed that several children, who are brought up in poverty, start their schooling somewhat behind their wealthy classmates. Moreover, the 2014 National Education Inspectorate (NEI) report revealed that over 60 per cent of primary and secondary schools in Jamaica are unable to properly deliver quality education to the students. I agree that poverty should not be an excuse for failure, but the fact remains that it affects the mind and spirit of an individual which hampers his abilities to achieve success. Hence, it is important that we find a solution that will deliver world-class education at highly affordable rates from reputed institutions.

I think currently there is a strong need to provide excellent higher education and vocational training opportunities to the youth. An accredited degree will enable them to look for job opportunities in majors companies not only in Africa, but on a global level. If you ask me, the most feasible solution for aspiring learners and young professionals in different parts of Africa is to pursue affordable and quality postgraduate business education as it will give them the push they need to build a lucrative career.

An Affordable Way To Learn
But when I am talking about how poverty is affecting education, how can I even think about expensive business degrees? I am sure you are probably asking the same question; but the fact is I am not talking about pursuing business degrees from expensive B-schools. I am merely pointing out to the fact that now you can earn accredited and affordable business degrees from reputed global universities by studying online.

Yes...online business education is one of the most feasible solutions that will empower you to fight poverty, whether you are in Jamaica, Nigeria or anywhere in Africa. By studying a postgraduate business management diploma course online you will acquire necessary business skills and knowledge and drastically improve your employability. However, the best thing about online degrees is that they only cost a fraction of traditional full time business degrees offered by the leading B-schools. However with online learning, you can study the same high quality programmes provided by major universities at a more affordable manner.

Moreover, as many employers around the globe are now accepting online business degrees, you will be able to land your dream job by earning your degree, boosting your skills and improving your employability. This will help you take the first major step in the fight against poverty.

Is Amina Yusuf The New Malala Yousafzai?

Most of us know about or have at least heard about Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani women's rights and female education activist. She disobeyed the Taliban present in Pakistan and insisted that all girls in the country were allowed to access education. However, she was shot by the Taliban in the head, but managed to survive. Malala was honoured with the Nobel Prize because of her courage and her struggle at the age of 17. If you feel inspired by her story, then its time you learn about Amina Yusuf. Who is she? Read on....

Meet Nigeria’s Malala

Amina Yusuf is an 18 year old Nigerian activist and an advocator of education for the girl-child in Nigeria. Moreover, she also acts as a mentor for young girl students at the CGE (Center for Girls’ Education) in Nigeria. She was selected as one of the 5 girls to join the youngest Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, while she accepted the prize in Oslo, Norway.

The Center for Girls’ Education honoured Amina with a scholarship, in association with the Population and Reproductive Health Initiative, a partnership among The Bixby Centre, the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. And the University of California, Berkeley. Currently Amina is determined to ensure that Nigerian girls get the right educational opportunities and she has vowed to keep moving forward with her efforts and address issues and challenges in Nigeria.

They Can’t Stop Amina

However, she admits that she is somewhat scared like other girl students in her country, especially after the Chibok abduction in April 2014. Amina said “I want world leaders to consider attacks on girls’ education. Insurgency in Nigeria means that there is fear in my community and fear for girls’ safety. Before now, we all thought that school was the safest place but now it’s scary. I’ve heard that many girls in boarding schools have been taken out by their parents or organisations for security reasons.”

She added “People are scared that their girls may be abducted too. I know that I’m scared too, but it won’t stop me from doing what I aspire to do. People weren’t able to stop Malala, and they can’t stop me.”

There’s Malala in Amina

Speaking about Malala Yousafzai, Amina Yusuf praised her efforts and said she is highly impressed by what Malala has achieved and how much progress have been accomplished by the Pakistani activist. Regarding her meeting with Malala in Oslo, she said “While I was there I realised that Malala’s award means that girls all over the world, including here in Nigeria, have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala’s voice is the voice of every girl in the world, and many girls tell me that because she invited me to join her in Oslo, they see Malala in me.”

Talking about her attempts, the Nigerian activist said that she has become a mentor at CGE “to give more girls opportunities. If it weren’t for that, maybe I would have been married off by my parents because they wouldn’t have been able to pay for my education.”

Amina added “I now mentor 15 girls, aged between 11 and 14, and assist one of the senior CGE mentors. My friends and all my younger brothers and sisters call me Malala now.”
